SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION When and Where? This is taught by classroom teachers at Disney.

Sexual health education builds a foundation of knowledge and skills relating to human development, relationships, decision-making, abstinence, contraception, and disease prevention. Sexual health education starts in kindergarten and continues through 12th grade. At every grade level, lessons teach developmentally appropriate and medically accurate information that build upon the knowledge and skills that were mastered in the previous stage.

» In grades K-4, the foundational instruction includes anatomy and physiology, puberty and adolescent development, identity, reproduction, healthy relationships and personal safety, often referred to as Family Life Education.

» In grades 5 through 12, the knowledge gained from grades K-4 serves as a foundation to which information about puberty and adolescent development and sexually transmitted diseases and HIV including information on abstinence, medically recommended contraceptives, transmission and prevention of STIs and HIV, informed decision making and sexual orientation are added.

Annual Instruction: Lessons for students in grades K-4 shall total a minimum of 300 minutes per grade, per school year. Lessons for students in grades 5-12 shall total a minimum of 675 minutes per grade, per school year.

Mandatory Training of Instructors: Any teacher who provides, or supports another teacher in providing sexual health education instruction must complete the district’s Sexual Health Education Instructor Training prior to teaching lessons. Each principal will designate a minimum of 2 instructors each school year to deliver sexual health education.

Parent/Guardian Notification: Parents/guardians must be provided with at least 3 notifications that sexual health education will occur in their child(ren)’s school prior to the start of instruction. Parents/guardians may opt their child(ren) out of sexual health education by providing a written objection. Without a written objection from parent or guardian, students will be required to participate in sexual health education.
